Eastern Sierra Fishing Report
Kevin Peterson's Fly Fishing Adventures
The D.W.P. has the flows up around 400 CFS which is not ideal for fishing. We are fishing Midges and Baetis right now with a few Caddis in the afternoon, so try Bead head Pheasant tails, Micro bead May fly emergers and Surface Emergers size #18 to 20 under an indicator. We are seeing wonderful BWO hatches from around 11 to 1 and some decent Caddis hatches after that.  The feeding window seems to be from 10 to 3.  As long as the flows are below 300 the fishing is great! We guide this river all winter!!
The Owens River Gorge is a wonderful year round fishery. and is a great alternative to the River when the flows are up. The stinging nettles are all but dead and the fishing is very good. Try fishing a size 16 Royal Wulff or Parachute Adams with a #20 olive W.D. 40 or Surface emerger as a dropper. You can sight the fish, so they can see you too! Be stealthy and fish up stream with 5 or 6x to the dry fly and 6 or 7x tippet to the dropper. If you want to go early, fish a Midge  pattern like a # 20 zebra or tiger under your dry fly. We guide this water all year, so call us for a day of fishing to learn how to take advantage of this fabulous winter fishery!

Upper Owens River
Hot Creek
The snow is gone but the green gate is still locked juts above the lower public section. The fishing has been very good using Beatis and Caddis. Look for the hatches to start around 11 but don't hesitate to nymph before and after the hatch.

Please remember that Hot Creek Ranch is private property and is closed to fishing until April 26th.

The San Joaquin River
East Walker River
The flows have been fluctuating back and forth from 90 to 200.  We won't fish here unless the flows are over 100 CFS but the fishing has been pretty good overall. Try #20 Midge patterns in Red and Zebra early then switch to 18 Mayfly patterns like flash back P.T.s or Micro Mays when the sun gets a little higher.

Closed until April 26th

Kevin's tip of the week
The Lower Owens River
The snow is all gone and the river is fishing well. The spawning Rainbows are starting to move into the river now, so please do not disturb them on or walk in their redds.  Please only fish to the fish that are holding in the deep pools or runs, not the fish that are staging on the redds or riffles. There are still a lot of holdovers from the agressive stalking done by the DFG last fall.
